After opening in 2000, Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies is one of the most popular attractions in Gatlinburg and with good reason! The friendly staff of the aquarium make sure to keep you entertained and provide a sense of wonder to everyone who visits. The aquarium offers a variety of exhibits that feature many different facets of aquatic life. Exhibits that showcase some of the smallest to largest types of species you will find in the depths of the worlds oceans.
When you arrive, the first thing you notice is the relaxing yet almost tropical design and decoration. Inside the aquarium, sometimes it’s tough to figure out which exhibit you would like to see first, so be sure to plan the time to see them all! Ripley’s Aquarium is divided into two levels, the “Upper” and “Lower” with much to see in them both. Keep reading for a short description of some of the amazing exhibits you will see in both!
The Upper Level at Ripley’s Aquarium
In the ocean realm, you can immerse yourself in the largest aquariums you’ve probably ever seen. You can watch fish school and swim naturally and you will probably spot a few species you’ve never seen before!
A visitor favorite, this 340-foot long glidepath takes you along the ocean floor in a full panoramic tunnel where you can watch sharks up-close and personal! You will see sharks, tarpons, sawfish and even sea turtles thriving in this absolutely breathtaking exhibit.
Touch A Ray Bay:
A great educational opportunity for a very misunderstood species. As Ripley’s guest you can reach out and touch Rays as they glide by! You will be able to feel their smooth skin and interact with rays without risk of harm to you or the rays! An exciting opportunity to touch and learn about these amazing animals.
This exhibit isn’t quit as interactive as Touch A Ray Bay but it is no less exciting. You will see species from tropical rainforests in this beautiful display of nature! You will see Piranhas, Poison Dart Frogs and other interesting native rainforest species.
The Lower Level at Ripley’s Aquarium
An amazing display of vidid colors and exotic fish that you would only see in the ocean! This beautiful and awe-inspiring coral reef exhibit is one of the most colorful adventures you’ll ever go on! You will see beautiful fish like the clown triggerfish, regal blue tang and foxface rabbitfish native the Indo-Pacific region.
Offers an exciting opportunity to interact with some of the most exciting animals in the aquarium. Now featuring Moon Jellies, Horseshoe Crabs and other great species that you can TOUCH! A great chance to play and learn with the help of Ripley’s wonderful educational staff.
Gallery of the Seas:
This exhibit showcases certains species that are so incredible that they are almost too beautiful or strange to believe they are real. Ranging from Octopus, Seastars, Corals, Jelllies and other animals with bright colors, odd shapes or fascinating movements. This is a great opporunity to see some of the oceans jewels highlighted in a living gallery.
Ripley’s Rays love the spotlight! At Ripley’s Stingray Bay you can watch them as they swim and stop to check you out. You may even get to see them being hand fed by Ripley’s divers. At the shallow end of the the tank you can even get up close with them!
This unique attraction is fun for everyone! Crawl through tunnels and peek thru windows as you watch these awesome penguins swim and splash in their playhouse. Ripley’s cast of penguins offers their own personality, making this a extraordinary spectacle!
